Among rich language and powerful storytelling lies a message about independence and the desperate nature of humans, within Sharon Olds’ The Blue Dress. The poem tackles an array of complex issues, but ultimately the text suggests a portrayal of the world that depicts humans as desperate for attention, and willing to give importance to otherwise trivial items in order to remember a memory or person significant in their life.
