Ku Klux Klan

Racism is a major issue even today. Even though people say that beauty comes from inside most of us judge people by their appearance. Today we even separate the music and clothes, rap and baggy clothes are black style while rock and preppie clothes are considered white styles. But the question is how did all this began?

Right after the Civil War some of the slave owners got frustrated with the defeat, because they didn\'t want to lose their slaves. But after they had to free all of the blacks, they felt humiliated so they denounced white Republicans as traitors to their race and tried to do everything to overthrow the Reconstruction. Uniting most Southern whites in opposition to the Reconstruction was not hard because they had many common feelings. Most of them were against racism and the rise in taxation to pay for new Reconstruction programs. These Southerners argued that overthrowing the Reconstruction would bring an end to the dictatorship and that they would re-establish orderly and responsible government. White people encouraged other whites to vote Democratic and in the upper South, majority of the people would vote for a Democratic Party, but lower South had more blacks, which they had to either convince them to vote Democratic or to stay home. This is where the White Groups come in.

One of the first major secret terrorist organizations was the Ku Klux Klan, which originated in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1865. The organization got started by six former Confederate army officers who named the clan after a Greek word kyklos, which means circle. The followers usually wore white robes while the leaders were dressed in black robes, they had cone shaped hats which covered their whole face. Their objective was to destroy the Reconstruction governments. Many people had the same beliefs as the KKK so soon it had many followers. They would terrorize the public officials in hopes to drive them from the office, they wanted to prevent the blacks from voting, holding office and exercising their new rights. They would burn crosses next to their victim\'s houses and if this didn\'t intimidate the person the KKK would beat or even kill the victim.

Ku Klux Klan was very popular in the southern states, so some states decided to form their own organizations. The Tennessee Pale Faces, the North Carolina White Brotherhood and the Louisiana Knights of the White Camellia are some of them.

In five years the KKK got uncontrollably violent that the Grand Wizard or a dictator of the Klan officially disbanded them. Other groups also became dramatically violent in 1871 in one of the Florida\'s counties, 163 blacks were killed and around New Orleans over 300 murders had occurred.

After all of these murders the Congress finally passed a law called the Ku Klux Klan Acts to outlaw these organizations. But that law didn\'t have much influence. Almost the entire lower South voted for Democrats, so the old fashioned Southern State government was back in charge, which meant massive scaling back of Reconstruction\'s accomplishments. The Southern states passed a law providing for the rigid segregation of the races. They also tried to lower blacks by having the literacy tests, poll taxes, and political primaries that were open only to whites. These objects prevented almost all Southern blacks from voting or choosing candidates.

As much as we can see today it looks that the American Civil War had only gotten rid of the slavery, but the blacks in the South were still not treated equally, nor did they have the same rights as the whites. And as we know still today we have a racial segregation, and the Ku Klux Klan is still around as well as the most original racist groups. And they are still violent and offensive to some people and they give influence and hope to others. And I think that as long as there are hate groups around and if they keep getting bigger and bigger we might just have us another war but it won\'t be North against South it will be a Caucasians against African-American against Oriental.
