How to Make Christmas Cookies
December 19, 2001

The tradition of giving gifts started with the Wise Men giving gifts to Jesus. Many people also give Christmas cookies as gifts. Christmas is just not the same without delicious cookies. They can make an ordinary Christmas even better.

To make these mouthwatering, delicious, Christmas cookies, it helps to prepare in advance. To make sure you don’t make too many cookies, or too few cookies, you need to look at how many cookies this recipe makes. This recipe makes sixty, two-inch cookies. The ingredients you will need are: 2 ½ cups of sifted flour, Christmas sprinkles, ½ teaspoon of salt, 2/3 cups of sugar, 1 egg, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 cup of soft butter, and 1 teaspoon of almond or lemon extract (if desired). The supplies you will need are: a spatula, oven, refrigerator, cookie cutters in the shape of Christmas trees, stars, angels, etc., measuring cup, bowl, rolling pin, flour sifter, teaspoon measure, cookie sheet, newspaper, and most importantly, your time and patience.

The steps to make these delicious cookies are as follows. First, in the mixing bowl, thoroughly mix 1 cup of soft butter and 2/3 cup of sugar until creamy. After mixing the butter and the sugar, add the teaspoon of vanilla extract. You can add almond or lemon extract, instead of adding the vanilla extract, for different flavoring. Also, add 1 egg, and beat the egg into the dough mix. Next, sift the 2-½ cups of flour into the bowl of dough. Then, add the ½ teaspoon of salt and mix, blending well. After mixing the salt and the sifted flour, place the dough in the refrigerator to chill for 3 to 4 hours.

Once the dough is chilled, flour the rolling pin and the rolling surface so the dough does not stick. Then, roll the dough out with the rolling pin until about ¼ of an inch thick all around. Warning! If the dough is too thick, the cookies will be doughy, and if it is too thin, the cookies will overcook! Next, use the cookie cutters to cut the dough. Make sure to use a variety of shapes so the cookies will be more interesting. After cutting the dough, use your spatula to place the dough on the cookie sheet. Now, if desired, you can add the sprinkles.

After adding the sprinkles, place the cookie sheet in the oven. Bake for about eight to ten minutes, or until golden-brown. Warning! Do not over cook or under cook, if you do, you have just wasted your time! Carefully remove the cookies from the oven. Do not burn yourself, it hurts! Use the spatula to put the cookies on the newspaper to cool. Don’t fret if you did not use all of the dough the first time, just repeat the process. Now, here comes the most important step, enjoy the cookies!

Although the tradition of gift giving began with the Wise Men, no one gave elaborate gifts until the 1800’s. Christmas cookies are not elaborate, but, they still mean a lot to people because you made them, and they taste good! Some of the most cherished gifts come from the heart and can’t be bought with money.
